“Each day, millions of children suffer from the scourges of poverty and economic crisis –

from hunger and homelessness, from epidemics and illiteracy, from degradation

of the environment. They suffer from the grave effects of the problems of external indebtedness

and also from the lack of sustainablegrowth in many developing countries, particularly the least

developed ones.”

– United Nations Children’s Fund

In the late 1980s, I visited the Mesa Grande Refugee camp for Salvadorans fleeing the civil war in their homeland.
There, I witnessed a people determined to survive years of conflict. I was drawn to the strength and resolve
of thousands.
